Abstract:

A Polish company has developed a universal safe elastic road barrier that attenuates loads on collision, irrespectively of the force of the impact. A key element of the construction is an attenuator. The elastic performance of the attenuator reduces the resistance of the barrier in the first phase of the collisions when the guide bar is deformed. Partners are sought for further testing as well as implementation of the production and exploitation.

Description:

A Polish company has developed a universal safe elastic road barrier that attenuates loads on collision. The main function of this protective road barrier is to hold the vehicle and direct it on the desired trajectory, ensuring maximum possible safety to the driver and passengers of the colliding vehicle. One of the key functional requirements for the road barrier is its capacity to ensure appropriate deceleration of the vehicle safe to human organisms. This depends on proper susceptibility of the barrier and its ability to both elastic and plastic deformation.
The novel proposed solution introduces attenuators, susceptible to loads, mounted between the guiding bars and the posts of the barrier. The attenuators allow for a smooth interception of the varying masses that load the barrier on the collision (e.g. cars, lorries, buses). The elastic performance of the attenuators reduces the resistance of the barrier in the first phase of the collision. Then during further displacement of the vehicle the resistance increases again. Two attenuators, mounted on two neighbouring posts, take over the load. Subsequent attenuators are engaged during the displacement. This solution brings about a continuous smooth deformation of the guiding bar, which ensures a safer progress of the collision and limits considerably its adverse effects.

Innovative Aspects:
This novel road barrier is composed of attenuators that ensure smooth interception of loads during the collisions of the vehicles with the barrier. The smooth deformation of the barrier, in contrast to the abrupt one occurring in standard constructions, ensures a better trajectory of the vehicle, safer progress of the collision and limits its adverse effects to the driver and the passengers.

Main Advantages:
1. The construction of the attenuator susceptible to loads allows for interception of colliding vehicles of varying masses while preserving its analogous performance.
2. Increased elasticity of the barrier allows for smooth attenuation of the dynamic load, decelerations much safer to human organisms, favourable trajectory of the displacing vehicle along the barrier and limitation of the elastic bouncing back into the road.
3. The improved attenuation of the dynamic loads reduces the adverse effects of the collisions i.e. harm to the drivers and the passengers, damage to vehicles and barriers.
4. The novel safer barrier deforms smoothly and gradually (not abruptly as it has been the case so far). The deformation is elastic and not plastic, which reduces the adverse effects of the collision.

Comments
A prototype of the attenuator was successfully tested in laboratory under static and dynamic loads. Further testing of the prototypic attenuator and barrier with the attenuators are required as well as implementation of the production and exploitation including the certificate for the ready product. Industrial partner (or manufacturer) is sought ; automotive industry, road transport branch
