Abstract:

A Polish research group offered new method of determining toxicity of moulding sands. Gases emitted while pouring the liquid foundry alloy on the investigated moulding sand are analysed quantitatively. Toxicity indexes for the sands can be then precisely calculated. As a result of this, assessment of the toxicity degree of the moulding sands prior to their use makes selection of less toxic sands possible. A partner interested in implementation of the method in the foundry industry is sought.

Description:

This method of determining toxicity of moulding sands involves pouring liquid foundry alloy, heated to a given temperature, over a specially prepared sample of the moulding sand investigated. The sand is totally immersed in the liquid alloy. Toxic gases emitted, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), are directly and quantitatively analysed. Using allowable concentrations of the toxic gases set in the regulations of each country, toxicity indexes that characterise the toxicity degrees of the moulding sands can be then precisely calculated.

Innovative Aspects:
The method allows for the precise comparison of different moulding sands with respect to their toxicity. The toxicity degrees are expressed in terms of numerical indexes.

Main Advantages:
The method reflects closely the real conditions of the foundry industry. It allows for a competent and precise comparison of the toxicity of different moulding sands.
