Abstract:

A Polish inventor has developed an innovative system that reduces rotation speed (in engines) and increases strokes number (in pumps). The system offers a simple, sinusoidal translation between rotary and linear motion with a minimum of parts. The company is looking for industrial partners interested in further development and companies for the testing of new applications and for commercialising the product.

Description:

The system developed by a Polish inventor offers a simple, sinusoidal translation between rotary and linear motion with a minimum of parts. The mechanism allows the use of variable output ratios incorporated within the assembly itself. Some of the advantages are reduced physical size, weight and manufacturing costs. The basic USZ System (Polish acronym for Universal Sinusoidal Feedback System) consists of a mechanism for the direct conversion of to-and-fro, backward and circular motion of two masses to unidirectional circular motion. At present, this function is commonly performed by the crankshaft system with connecting rods. The main difference between these two methods is that in the crankshaft system the vector of force is always perpendicular, whereas in the USZ System the vector of force is always parallel to the axis of rotation. This parallel vector of force can be decomposed into two component vectors in opposite directions, which are tangent to the circle radii; this yields continuous and direct-acting unidirectional torque.
The USZ System uses a method for the direct conversion of bi-directional rectilinear motion of the same physical mass to unidirectional circular motion (and vice-versa)
The elimination of cranking and the connecting rod considerably simplifies the design and overcomes the drawbacks of the crankshaft system. In addition, it brings new advantages that have hitherto been unattainable.
The principle of the crankshaft system is based on the definition of windlass kinematics, and as such the inherent disadvantages, in spite of constant modernisation of the system, have been impossible to overcome for over a hundred years. The stroke of a piston mass in the crankshaft system always depends on the double length of the crankshaft radius, whereas in the USZ System, the stroke depends on the slope of the function in relation to its circular axis.

Technical Advantages of the USZ System:
1. Simple construction, fluent operation, no oscillations or vibrations.
2. Multiplied capacity / number of working cycles per single rotation.
3. Direct reduction of rotation speed or increase in the number of strokes in relation to the number of rotations.
4. Reduced physical size and weight
5. Aids the use of non-metallic pistons / cylinders

Innovative Aspects:
The offered various problems and compromises associated with existing technology - including removing piston side thrust, enabling the possible use of ceramic (or other non-metallic) pistons / cylinders, and omission of moving sealing devices.
The innovation of the USZ System consists in the substitution of the crankshaft and connecting rod function with a periodical, closed-shape and distorted trigonometric function. The principle of this system is founded on basic physical and mathematical laws, which state that the graphic representation of a simple oscillating motion is the sinusoidal curve, and similarly that the graphic representation of the point moving along the circle is also the sinusoidal curve. The USZ System was developed on the basis of the reciprocity of these two definitions.
The spatial motion of the mass of the piston performs numerous functions:
1. Eliminates vibrations and oscillations.
2. Stores the kinetic energy of the circular motion.
3. Reduces rotation speed (in engines) or increases strokes number (in pumps).
4. Enables pumps and compressors to operate without the use of valves.
5. In pumps and compressors, changing the direction of rotation causes a change in the mode of operation, i.e. from suction to compression.
6. In four-stroke engines, eliminates the timing gear.
7. Facilitates aspiration and compression of air in the engine combustion (i.e. turbo charging) without the use of valves.
8. In two-stroke engines, forces the mixture through to the combustion chamber.

The USZ System allows for fluent change in the compression ratio during engine operation; this is impossible in the crankshaft or Wankel engine systems.

Main Advantages:
1. Simple construction, easy assembly and dismantling.
2. Very few mobile parts, lightweight.
3. Easy cooling and lubrication.
4. Tight seals on the whole system.
5. Multipurpose features of the USZ system, for common and widespread use as well as various types of specialist applications.

Use of the USZ System instead of the crankshaft system gives economy of fuel, raw materials and energy, and benefits.
