Abstract:

A Polish SME has developed a new kind of wireless connection device suitable for use as a terminal for wide use. MobiCell/ATM provides ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) with wireless communication with banks' mainframe host computers via digital wireless networks. The company is looking for industrial partners interested in cooperation and further development, and in research institutes and companies for testing of new applications.

Description:

A Polish SME has developed a new kind of wireless communication device suitable for use as a terminal for wide use. MobiCell/ATM enables wireless communication ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) with banks' mainframe host computers via Mobitex, GPRS (General Personalised Response Signalling), and GSM (Global system for Mobile Communications). MobiCell/ATM is a complete solution for any ATM vendor and type. This is a terminal that contains all the required hardware, software, and internal radio-modem. The terminal is actually a "black-box" that can be externally attached to any existing ATM, without making any modification to the ATM itself. That is, the wireless connection is totally transparent to the ATM. MobiCell/ATM terminal can be connected to an ATM via TCP/IP, X.25 or RS-232 link. Normally, TCP/IP and RS-232 are better in terms of performance and cost. MobiCell/ATM and the bank's host are connected via a gateway. The bank's Host recognises the ATMs as before. The gateway keeps a table of ATMs, and converts the messages sent to ATMs to Mobitex communication. This elegant solution makes wireless communication completely transparent on both the bank and ATM sides. Whenever the bank's host sends data to the ATM, MobiCell/ATM receives this data and converts it from MASC (Multiarray Signal Conditioner) to the format expected by the ATM. The company is looking for industrial partners interested in cooperation and further development and in research institutes and companies for testing of new applications.

Innovative Aspects:
MobiCell/ATM functions as a switch. Whenever the ATM attempts to send data to the bank's host via the communication port, MobiCell/ATM captures the data, encapsulates it in MASC frames and immediately sends it over Mobitex to the bank's host, via the gateway. That is, the wireless connection is totally transparent to the ATM. MobiCell/ATM ensures error-free transfer of data. Packets that are not correctly received will be automatically re-sent until the correct data is transferred. Offered solution is simple, low-cost and safe (for data transfer).

Main Advantages:
It is a complete solution, independent from different ATM vendors and type. It could be use as a primary way of communication as well as a secondary one (in case of any interruption in wire communication). It's highly cost-effective for temporary use.
