Abstract:

A Polish automotive engineer has invented an indicator (supplementary to traffic lights) showing time left to colour change. The information about time is shown in a clear way (easier to read than a digit display), and makes it possible to often avoid breaking and accelerating, and therefore to reduce: fuel consumption, exhaust emission and car wearing. The inventor is looking for the city/country that would apply this improvement.

Description:

The traffic lights invented by a Polish engineer are composed of a standard set of lamps and two supplementary columns of lamps located above it: one of reds and one of greens. The role of these columns is to give driver information about time left to colour change. The lamps of the green column are turned on at the same moment as the green lamp of the standard set. The lamps of that column are successively turned off. The last one is turned off at the same time as the lamp of the standard set. The column of red lamps informs the driver about time left to colour change from red to green and works in a similar way.
The invention can be successfully implemented on almost every junction (including crossing with traffic lights controlled by a button pushed by pedestrians). The only cases in which the indicator might be useless are junctions with synchronised lights (“green wave”).
The indicator should be large enough to “tell” drivers as early as necessary to slow down. The estimated range of the indicator depth should be from 100 cm in cities up to 200 cm and more on highways. The average power consumption of the indicator is 200 W.

Innovative Aspects:
The information is presented in a way that makes the driver use his mind only a little. No digits are used to indicate the time remaining, so the driver's brain scarcely has to translate a picture sent by the eye into useful information. A short glance at the column of lamps is sufficient to make a proper decision: accelerate or take the foot off the gas pedal. The shape of indicator makes it visible even from a large distance. Because of its slender shape, the chassis of the indicator is not very sensitive to wind blast, and therefore can be as large as necessary to be well visible.

Main Advantages:
The invention described above makes it possible to decrease the number of instances of sudden car braking and accelerating and therefore to reduce following values:
- Fuel consumption
- Exhaust emission
- Wear of tyres and elements of braking systems
- Wear of elements of drive systems like: engines, frictional linings of clutch, low gears, and joints
- Forming traffic jams as an effect of cross-road blocking by vehicles of lower accelerating ability
- Noise produced by engines
- Effect of kneading a surface of road during stay at traffic lights
