Beta Technology Ltd is a technology consultancy that specialises in working within the innovation and enterprise arena. The company has its main office in Doncaster and has a subsidiary office in Stockton.
The company's mission is to: "Help our clients improve competitiveness and create wealth through the provision of expert innovation support services".
Beta was founded in 1984 by Dr Bob Keown OBE, with the aim of being 'technology led with strong business skills', a philosophy that still drives the company today. Over 70% of Beta's staff are science graduates, in keeping with its tradition of employing high calibre technologist from a wide range of scientific disciplines.
Beta enjoys a European wide reputation for assisting organisation to acquire funding for research and to develop and exploit new technologies. Clients are also supported with technology implementation through the provision of project management and consultancy studies, the organisation of conferences and events and a specialist technology employment and recruitment agency.
Beta currently works on behalf of the European Commission, a range of UK government departments, Regional Development Agencies and other public sector bodies, to provide support to businesses and academia across a wide range of sectors.
Since 1992, Beta has provided information and assistance to organisations across the UK to encourage participation in the European Framework Programme.
The free and confidential services that Beta offers are:
Operation of a helpline for Framework Programme enquiries.
One to one meetings to discuss project ideas and proposals.
Assistance with proposal preparation and pre-screening.
Liaison with the UK science base, national and European networks, industry representatives and the European Commission.
Training activities such as workshops and information days.
Design and publication of user friendly publicity material.
Regular e-bulletins for updates on FP6 and new calls.
Assistance with partner searching.
Beta Technology currently acts as the Framework Programme Six National Contact Point for:
Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health
Food quality and safety
Global change and ecosystems
Research and innovation
SME activities.
In addition to these National Contact Point roles, Beta is involved in several European Union funded projects which involves working with partners across Europe to train on and promote the Framework Programme. These projects cover a variety of subjects and sectors and include:
Rural-ETINET: The aim of this project is to set up and manage a network of sub-networks of SMEs, SME representatives and organisations that work with SMEs in rural areas. Network members are encouraged to participate in and submit FP6 projects, particularly in Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence. The sub networks cover the following areas: novel crops, on-farm processing, forestry/wood chain, waste management, eco-systems.
Trainet Future: The objective of TrainNet Future is to raise the quantity and quality of research projects from participants as partners or coordinators - particularly from Candidate Countries - in all types of instruments in Thematic Priority 5 'Food Quality and Safety'.
SMEs Go Life Sciences: This project aims to support the participation of SMEs in the life sciences area of FP6, especially in Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence. The project provides support of consortium building, and matchmaking for SMEs and researchers preparing EU project proposals. There will be 160 national training events, real and virtual brokerage events and the establishment of a high-quality database of SMEs.
WomenEnFP6: This project is creating clusters of women-led companies in different industrial sectors to support trans regional co-operation and networking. It allows the coordinators of Integrated Project and Networks of Excellence access to these companies and to include them in their FP6 proposals. The project includes setting up a database of women entrepreneurs, training and the generation of clusters of companies in health, information and communication technologies and socio-economics.
Naomitech: Naomitech aims to promote the participation of SMEs in FP6, focussing on projects in nano and micro technologies and their application in the ICT, transportation, health care, aerospace and environment sectors.
