EIC Timisoara RO 823 region

The greatest part of EIC Timisoara RO 823 region is represented by the ancient region of Banat that has been part of the Austrian Empire, benefiting from a more sustained economic development than other regions of Romania. Due to the existence of the capitalist and industrial elements, since their appearance in the XVIIIth century, the region has had a continuous and strong tradition in industrial development and innovation. The proof that sustains this fact is the existence of the Timisoara Brewery - founded 1718, Timisoara Chain Factory, Timisoara Hat Factory - 1908, Timisoara Wool Industry, Otelu Rosu metallurgical factory, Resita metallurgical factory, Bocsa metallurgical factory.

TERRAIN: EIC TIMISOARA RO 823 covers four counties: Arad, Caras-Severin, Hunedoara and Timis (Romania is organized, from an administrative point of view, in 41 counties).

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: EIC Timisoara RO823 is situated in the Western part of Romania. The geographical location of the region is extremely favorable, at the crossing point of some important European Roads, where the West Cultures and Civilization interferes to the ones in the East.

LAND BOUNDERIES: EIC Timisoara RO823 covers, through its services, an area of 4 counties situated in the Western part of Romania: Timis, Arad and Caras-Severin, Hunedoara.

GEOGRAPHIC COORDINATES: The 45o Northern Latitude Parallel is crossing the very heart of the Region. The most Western Point in the Country is Beba Veche, Timis County, coordinates: 20o15' Eastern Longitude.

AREA: The surface area has 30522 square Km, which means 13,43 % from the total area of Romania ( Timis county = 3,65%; Caras-Severin county = 3,57%; Arad County = 3,25 % and Hunedoara County = 2, 96 %)

BORDER COUNTRIES: Three of the above mentioned counties are border counties, neighboring with Hungary and Yugoslavia. In the South-West: Yugoslavia having the Danube for 60 km as a border, in the North-West Hungary. According to the crossing points from the country's borders, the average distance to the capitals of these two countries - Belgrade and Budapest- is of 170 and respectively 300 km. The national borders of this region are the following counties: Bihor, Alba, Mehedinti and Gorj.

CROSSING BORDERS: There are four crossing borders with Hungary on this western territory: three in Arad County (Nadlac, Varsand and Turnu) and one in Timis County (Cenad - Kisszombor). With Yugoslavia there are four crossing borders; Jimbolia and Moravita in Timis county, and Naidas and Moldova Noua in Caras - Severin County.

CLIMATE: temperate - continental, with (sub) Mediterranean influences in Caras-Severin County (area of Herculane), having multi - annual medium temperatures oscillating between 10- 12oC. The multi - annual average rainfalls ranges between 560 - 580 l/sq.m, considerably higher in the mountain areas (specific to the highest altitudes, in Hunedoara County).

LANDSCAPE: All the landscape forms are harmoniously present in the region: plane, hills, and mountains. The region is crossed by many rivers. The most important of them are: Danube, Mures, Bega-Timis channel, Cerna, Jiu. All rivers cross the Romanian Frontier to Hungary or to Yugoslavia.

NATURAL RESOURCES: The iron ores and non-ferrous metals from Caraº-Severin and Hunedoara Counties, the coal from the two Counties, were the main natural elements which determined the development of the extractive, iron and steel, and metallurgical industries, and, later, of the construction of machines. Other important natural resources are: timber, natural gas, coal, iron ore, salt, arable land, hydropower.

POPULATION: The region covered by Euro Info Center EIC RO823 Timisoara has 2.1 millions inhabitants, the majority of the population lives in the 36 towns and Municipalities.

URBANISATION LEVEL: 2,43 %, higher than the one for the whole Country (56,73 %, compared to 54,3 %). 39 % from the inhabitants of the Region are concentrated in the four County Capitals.

ETHNICAL GROUPS: the West Region is an interference area of ethnic, languages, traditions and cultures. This specific feature puts the West Region close to the European and universality concept. The population of the Region consists of 83,0 % Romanians, 8,6 % Hungarians, 3,0 % Germans, 2,4 % Gypsies 1,8 % Serbs, the rest of 1,8 % represents a mixture of nationalities (out of which: Slovaks, Ukrainians, Checks, Bulgarians, Jews, etc.).

RELIGION: The dominant Religion is Orthodox (representing 78,5 %), followed by the Roman - Catholic religion (with 11,7 %).

LABOR FORCE: The employed population represents 1.117.300 which means 39,26% of the population of the Region:

In industry 307.700 = 27,53 %
In trade 114.300 = 10,23 %

UNEMPLOYEMENT: The main cause of the unemployment statistics is represented by the massive dismissals from the industry and the incapacity of the other economic sectors to hire the work force. The unemployment rate is:

In Caraº-Severin county 10,9 %
In Arad county 7,9 %
In Timiº county 8,1 %

LAND USE: Within the region, both the largest total and agricultural surfaces are owned by the Timis County, having 869.665 Hectares, respectively 702.358 Hectares. The agricultural surface: the private sector owns in Hunedora County 75.67% and in Timis 54.01 %. The forests represent in Caras-Severin County 48.1%, followed by Hunedora County 44.28%, Arad 27.36 and Timis 12.53.

INDUSTRIES: The West region is relatively rich in natural resources, which during the time have determined a strong industrial development. The Arad and Timis counties have a diversified and complex industry, of which the most important is represented by the processing industry (90% of production in Arad County and 70% of the production in Timis County): food, chemical, light, food processing and railway transport means industries.

AGRICULTURE: The outputs of the agricultural activities are dedicated to the direct consumption (vegetables, fruits, animals, meat products, canned vegetables, fruits, meat products) and selling on the Regional and National markets, as well.

ENVIRONMENT: The West Region has the advantage of a varied relief. The forests of the Region represent an essential element of air regeneration, and at the same time a protective environment for the fauna. This "green lung" of the Planet represents 28% of the total surface of the region. In several Counties, the percentage is higher: 44% Hunedoara, 48% in Caras-Severin.

THE EDUCATION SYSTEM: Due to the many ethnical groups from Region V West, one of the main characteristics of the education system is the existence of many primary and secondary schools where the minorities' language is used (Hungarian, Serbian, German, Slovakian, Rroma) or an international language (English, French). Also, there are high schools where the language of minorities is used.

  • RAILWAY NETWORK: the West region has also a very well developed, denser than compared to the one of the whole country. An important fact for the International traffic of goods and passengers is that the lines linked to the Transcarpathian ones can ensure connections with the neighboring counties and regions.

    AIR TRANSPORT: well represented too: in this west region there is an airport in every of the four counties, in Timisoara, Arad, Caransebes and Deva. The International Airport Timisoara, the second in Romania, constantly cooperates with many air companies: Tarom, Austrian Airlines, JAT, facilitating fast connections for goods and passengers to Bucharest, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Verona, Vienna, New York, etc. Its technical endowment allows even the access to some of the biggest planes such as Airbus 310 or Concorde. After its extension, the airport from Arad, is now ready to allow the access for international flights. Its activity was developed in the field of cargo air transport of goods.

    RIVERS WITH NAVIGABLE POTENTIAL: the Danube, in the southern side of Caras - Severin County, with links to Western Europe, up to Germany, allows access to the Black Sea. The Mures, on the Arad and Hunedoara counties' territories, continuing to Hungary, enables the link with the Danube. The Bega Channel, on Timis County's territory, with continuation in Yugoslavia, was navigable in the past. The last two rivers are not yet prepared for navigation.
